Hours:                                     Vary, up to 29 hours per week

Job Description

The Swim Coach, hereby agrees that throughout his/her period of employment s/he shall devote his/her full attention and time, during working hours, to the performance of his/her duties and business affairs City of Manitou Springs, in addition to performing said duties faithfully and efficiently as directed by the Head Coach. It is not the intention of the Head Coach to assign duties and responsibilities which are not typically within the scope and characteristics associated with this position, or of which may not be required of other coaches of similar rank and position. However, the Head Coach reserves the right to increase and/or revise the Employee's role and responsibilities, through reorganization of his/her position.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The detailed list of job duties and responsibilities for the Employee are as follows:

 

Program Management

  • Responsible for assigned level (s) of the Swim Team program:
    • Direct Coaching duties for swimmers in the assigned training groups
    • Design or oversee training plans for assigned training groups
    • Oversee seasonal progression of athletes, set goals with swimmers, monitor phases of development with individual swimmers
    • Prompt attendance at all scheduled workouts and swim meets
  • Work with the Head Coach to recruit new swimmers on the team
  • Work with Head Coach to determine all individual and relay events for athletes at swim meets if needed.
  • Support the Head Coach in setting appropriate goals if needed
  • Has authority to dismiss any swimmer (at least temporarily) but is required to email an incident report to the Head Coach immediately or within 2-hours
  • Establishes an environment that fosters positive team attitudes, encourages self-discipline, sportsmanship, and responsibility
  • Support and facilitate progress toward CHSAA Swimming Recognition and Club Excellence Goals
  • All Coaches report directly to the Head Coach

Communication

  • Maintain healthy professional relationships with the Head Coach, communicate and update Head Coach regularly (email is the preferred method of communications)
  • Communicate regularly and appropriately with swimmers
  • As needed and within reason make yourself available before and after practice to discuss swimmer/diver progress with head coach
  • As needed / requested provide input into the website

Administration

  • Adhere to and enforce team policies and procedures with swimmers
  • Support season planning process as needed
  • Organize and care for team equipment. Provide report to Head Coach on missing/needed/broken equipment
  • Maintain daily attendance records for all training groups and provide to head coach at the end of the season
  • Take bus attendance to and from meet and report missing swimmers to head coach
  • Collect permission slips from parents at meets or other activity if not returning with team on bus (email works as well)
  • Actively support in marketing and fundraising efforts

Financial Stewardship

  • Support the annual budget;
    • Communicate capital expenditure needs for the fiscal year to the Head Coach
    • Provide timely reimbursement receipts associated with team. Reimbursement TBD based on team budget and obtaining prior approval from the head coach
    • Communicate any questions regarding fees or swimmer expenses to the Head Coach, do not enter any "unique / special" pricing deals on behalf of the team

 

Additional Duties

  • Adapt your teaching approaches to the ages, experiences and abilities of participants so they can meet course objectives.
  • Provide for the health and safety of participants, including ensuring that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards, and that materials and equipment are safe.
  • Communicate regularly with participants and their parents, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress.
  • Complete records and reports.
  • Participate in regular in-service trainings.
  • Requests supervisor's assistance, guidance, intervention and approval as needed and provides clear, concise documentation and explanations to incident reports.
  • Respond and assist effectively in emergencies in accordance with facility emergency action plans
  • Enforce all aquatics facility policies, rules and regulations.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by Head Coach.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Swim lesson function and swim strokes (Butterfly, Breaststroke, Backstroke, Freestyle and turns). Starts and dives.
  • Teaching and classroom strategies.
  • Water Rescue and First aid practices as taught by the American Red Cross or equivalent.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Remain calm, make sound decisions and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Maintain personal physical endurance and agility.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, needed for reports, class registration and service.
  • Strong customer service skills needed to interact with public. Must be able to work effectively with a wide variety of people and situations.
  • Understand and apply city and departmental policies and procedures, and pertinent state and local regulations relating to lifeguard procedures and emergency operations.
  • Thorough knowledge and application of swimming and water safety skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and application of teaching swimming.
  • Leadership and public relation skills.
  • Decision-making skills.
  • Think clearly, act quickly, and apply logic and common sense to problem solving.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate, comprehensive and concise reports and records required by the position.
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels.

 

Experience, Education, and Training:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. (some college preferred)
  • Must have coached within the last 8-12 months
  • Preferred minimum 2 years competitive swim coaching experience with a USA Swimming club
  • Meet all USA Swimming coaching requirements.
  • Valid driver's license is required
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

 

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to understand and apply city and departmental policies and procedures, and pertinent state and local regulations relating to lifeguard procedures and emergency operations.
  • Ability to think clearly, act quickly, and apply logic and common sense to problem solving.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing, at the lifeguard level.
  • Ability to walk, run, jump, climb, swim, drive, sit, lift and carry equipment up to 60 pounds, lift overhead and balance equipment up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors in a humid environment for long periods of time.
