This position is a member of the Public Works Department Facilities Division and reports directly to the Lead/Public Works Director. All staff in the Public Works Department, whether directly or indirectly, are supervised by the Public Works Director. The Facilities Janitorial Maintenance Worker I performs a variety of cleaning and janitorial services in City facilities.

  • Ensures city facilities are clean and disinfected including but not limited to: offices, Memorial Hall, kitchen, meeting chambers, Public Works buildings, and public restrooms.
  • Maintains city equipment and city facilities.
  • Ensures cleaning and maintenance materials and supplies are stored in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Maintains an adequate supply of cleaning materials and supplies, requisitioning and restocking as necessary.
  • Replenishes inventory in public restrooms as necessary.
  • Makes adjustments and minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Ensures facilities are clean and ready prior to each event.
  • Sets up, arranges, and removes decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.
  • Inspects facilities after each city facility event; ensure cleaning services are completed as necessary.
  • Collects and disposes of trash and recyclables.
  • Monitors building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
  • Performs heavy manual labor including digging and lifting.
  • Establishes layout and sets up safety traffic controls around active work area.
  • Plows snow, shovels sidewalks, and performs other winter hazard mitigation.
  • Sets up and operates a confined space entry tripod and safety harness and associated data recording.
  • Performs atmospheric monitoring of a confined space and prepares confined space entry permits and files reports.
  • Completes work in a professional manner utilizing accepted standards and practices.
  • Operates heavy machinery, hand tools, power equipment, and vehicles, including commercial vehicles.
  • Reports maintenance issues, damages, and acts of vandalism.
  • Assists other public services departments with tasks.


  • Maintains accurate records and daily logs.
  • Inspects materials and workmanship to insure quality standards.
  • Expedites the flow of material and supplies to assigned job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be computer literate with Microsoft Office familiarity.
  • May be subject to a background check.
  • Must pass a motor vehicle record review and a driving evaluation upon offer of employment.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to comply with all rules and regulations, including the Personnel Manual, the General Safety Procedures and the Confined Space Program.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and equipment, including identification of, precautions for and emergency response to hazardous gases and vapors.
  • Must have some understanding of general construction practices and be proficient with various hand tools.
  • Must be able to comprehend oral and written instructions and communicate in English orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to perform basic math such as addition and subtraction.
  • Ability to work evening, night, weekend, standby shifts, and perform occasional overtime.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
  • Demonstrate good workmanship in a neat and timely manner while maintaining a clean and orderly environment.
  • Must be able to complete work in a professional manner utilizing accepted standards and practices.
  • Ability to perform tasks and assist coworkers with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and to formulate work procedures within the limits of the position to accomplish assigned tasks.

Experience, Education, and Training:

  • Must have high school diploma or possess a GED.
  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver License.

  • Ability to work under varying weather conditions while exposed to dampness, fumes, odors, dust, insects, noise, chemicals, and biological, electrical and mechanical traffic hazards.
  • Physical strength and dexterity requirements include the ability to:
    • Lift and carry 50 pounds of tools or construction materials;
    • Grasp, push, pull, handle, reach overhead, bend-over, balance, and climb;
    • Ability to traverse uneven, wet or broken terrains;
    • Ability to remove and replace metal manhole covers and grates weighing approximately 165 pounds;
    • Ability to perform constant lifting and stooping;
    • Ability to drag 100 feet of 3" fire hose full of water.
  • Endurance and capacity to perform hard physical labor.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and climb in and out of manholes of various depths.
  • Ability to work while wearing personal protective equipment such as: a self-contained breathing apparatus, steel-toed shoes, rain gear, hard hats, goggles, etc.
