This position is a member of the Public Works Water and Sewer Division and reports directly to the Water and Wastewater Superintendent. All staff in the Public Works department, whether directly or indirectly, are supervised by the Public Works Director. The Water Maintenance Worker I performs a variety of labor intensive duties related to the construction, inspection, maintenance, and improvement of municipal potable water and sewage collection systems. This is a safety sensitive position that requires a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL).

  • Participates in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of the municipal potable water systems.
  • Performs heavy manual labor including digging, lifting, and breaking pavement under varying weather conditions while exposed to dampness, fumes, odors, dust, biological, electrical and mechanical traffic hazards.
  • Ensures maintenance materials and supplies are stored in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Installs, adjusts and repairs manholes, manhole frames and covers, sewer clean-out boxes, valve box castings, curb stops, water meter boxes and meter setters.
  • Establishes layout and sets up safety traffic controls around active work area.
  • Cuts and repairs various types of pavement.
  • Cuts, fits and lays water and sewer lines.
  • Removes manhole covers, enters manholes and unclogs stopped sewer lines.
  • Installs sewer clean-outs and connections.
  • Sets up and operates a confined space entry tripod and safety harness and associated data recording.
  • Performs atmospheric monitoring of a confined space and prepares confined space entry permits and files reports.
  • Completes work in a professional and safe manner utilizing accepted standards and practices.
  • Operates heavy machinery, hand tools, power equipment, and vehicles, including commercial vehicles.
  • Assists with video inspection and sealing of sanitary sewer lines.
  • Participates in the rehabilitation of wastewater collection system lines, laterals, and manholes.
  • Maintains city vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists other Public Works departments with tasks.


  • Maintains accurate records and daily logs.
  • Inspects materials and workmanship to insure quality standards.
  • Expedites the flow of material and supplies to assigned job.
  • Makes main water line tap connections for extension of distribution system and makes water meter connections of various size and type, and makes sewer tap connections.
  • Install, repairs and reads water meters, and assists with water turn-ons and shutoffs.
  • Place new water meters in inventory by proper identification with meter number and records meter inventory data.
  • Installs, tests, repairs, paints and maintains fire hydrants.
  • Performs valve exercising, valve box cleanouts, and other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be computer literate with Microsoft Office familiarity.
  • Must submit to and pass a drug screening test upon offer of employment.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to comply with all rules and regulations, including the Personnel Manual, the General Safety Procedures and the Confined Space Program.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and equipment, including identification of, precautions for and emergency response to hazardous gases and vapors.
  • Must have some understanding of general construction practices and be proficient with various hand tools.
  • Must be able to comprehend oral and written instructions and communicate in English orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to perform mathematical calculations with fractions, decimals, and percentages in the U.S. and metric systems.
  • Ability to work evening, night, weekend, on-call, standby shifts, and perform occasional overtime.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
  • Demonstrate good workmanship in a neat and timely manner while maintaining a clean and orderly environment.
  • Must be able to complete work in a professional manner utilizing accepted standards and practices.
  • Ability to perform tasks and assist coworkers with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and to formulate work procedures within the limits of the position to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Ability to safely operate a dump truck.

Experience, Education, and Training:

  • Must have high school diploma or possess a GED.
  • Must have a valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver License (CDL).
  • Must obtain Flagger Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Must have or be able to obtain Class 1 Waste Water Collection Certification and Water Distribution Certification from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment within a year of employment or the next testing cycle.
  • At least two years' experience in potable water systems and/or sewage collection systems preferred.

  • Ability to work under varying weather conditions while exposed to dampness, fumes, odors, dust, insects, noise, chemicals, and biological, electrical and mechanical traffic hazards.
  • Physical strength and dexterity requirements include the ability to:
    • Lift and carry 50 pounds of tools or construction materials;
    • Grasp, push, pull, handle, reach overhead, bend-over, balance, and climb;
    • Climb ladders and descend manhole steps approximately 25 feet deep;
    • Ability to traverse uneven, wet or broken terrains;
    • Ability to remove and replace metal manhole covers and grates weighing approximately 165 pounds;
    • Ability to perform constant lifting and stooping;
    • Ability to drag 100 feet of 3" fire hose full of water.
  • Endurance and capacity to perform hard physical labor.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and climb in and out of manholes, vaults, and trenches of various depths.
  • Ability to operate various hand tools such as, but not limited to: jackhammer, pavement breaker, pick, shovel and various wrenches.
  • Ability to operate various equipment such as, but not limited to: air compressors, jet-wash trucks, rodding machines, boring machines and various types of pumps. Backhoe, mini excavator, and skid loader experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work while wearing personal protective equipment such as: a self-contained breathing apparatus, steel-toed shoes, rain gear, hard hats, goggles, etc.
  • Ability to tolerate inclement weather including heat, humidity, and cold.
